7 ways to make your bedroom feel like a sanctuary

Whether you love interior design or are a feng shui convert, there is nothing better than lying in bed and feeling totally content – and yes, we mean picking up that pile of clothes on your floor. We’ve rounded up the best ideas to make your bedroom feel more like a sanctuary, which in turn, should help you get a good night’s rest. Fingers crossed.

Allow space.

By decluttering your space, you’ll feel more relaxed and be ready to take on challenges with a clear head. Start by donating or gifting items that you don’t need – especially larger pieces of furniture. If you have a particularly small room, stick to neutral colour tones and white elements – you’ll be able to make the space appear bigger than it is. Remember, you don’t need to fill every nook and cranny of the room, sometimes less is more. If you are wanting to play with colours, aim for one or two complementary colours in significant pieces throughout your bedroom – for example, mustard yellow throw pillows or lilac sheets.

Décor is key.

For smaller spaces, or those with wooden floors, the easiest way to create a sanctuary is by adding a soft, plush rug to your space. Not only does this create warmth, but it can also save your feet during the colder months. Plants can also be a great way to add some natural greenery to a room, so pick a large but easy to care for plant for your room – our favourite picks are Monsteras or a hanging Devil’s Ivy. Adding some plants to your room has proven to help reduce blood pressure and anxiety – plus, they’re pretty cute too.

Orange over Blue.

Lighting is super important when it comes to the bedroom. Unlike the kitchen which needs stark, blue lighting – the bedroom should have a calming, orange light to avoid hurting your eyes. If you can, opt for dimmer lights or larger lamps, as you can control the level of lighting depending on the evening.

Invest in a good candle.

Having a signature, relaxing scent throughout your bedroom can help you get to sleep quickly, as well as giving your sanctuary a refresh. There have been many studies into aromatherapy and candles– so (safely) light your favourite candle (when you’re in the room, of course) and do something you love: read a book or listen to calming music. Lavender is a firm favourite amongst those who struggle to get to sleep.

Give everything a deep clean.

And we don’t mean just giving it a simple wipe down. By cleaning all the windowsills, dusting out cabinets, giving the carpets a good vacuum and opening the curtains can really make a difference to your room, and your mood. By giving everything a new lease of life, it can really make a difference to how you view your room – you might even find something you’ve been missing.

Buy a good mattress.

Nothing seems more ‘adult’ than going mattress shopping, but where to start? Having a good mattress can really set you up for a good night’s rest. Your mattress should be firm enough for back support, but also soft enough to allow movement throughout the night – no aches and pains, here!

Make your bed every morning.

Although it is tempting to roll out of bed and rush out the door, taking the extra time to fluff up the quilt and re-arrange the pillows can really boost your mood. Not only does it make you feel like you have your life together before 8am, you can start your day on the right foot – even if you don’t feel accomplished, you’ve done one thing for today.
